Well, to know this we need to go back to the 16th century, where the upper-class individuals used ribbons to prevent the ruffled ends of their shirts sleeves from coming open. This practice continued until many centuries. Later, by the early 19th century, when the construction of modern shirts for men came into existence, the ruffles were replaced by the cuffs which had secured links. One such story claims that French cuffs kick-started when Napoleon ordered extra-long sleeves for the shirts which were worn by his soldiers in his troops of an army so that they could wipe their noses at the end of their sleeves and then roll back their cuffs back.  This story has no historical evidence however, it is more of a fun story to hear!




French cuffs or double cuffs are the cuffs that allow the fabric to roll it back over itself and seal it with cufflinks or silk knots. There are holes on both sides of the cuff through the layers of the fabric of the garment.
